Ummm, What?

As I've said many times I'm a skeptic. I don't believe things unless I see them in front of my own eyes.  Well today something happened out of nowhere.  We were sitting at the dinner table in the kitchen when we heard the mirror in the entry way rattle.  My girlfriend and I both thought this was because of the cat. He often sits on the bench in front of it and bumps into it when he moves.

However when we glanced at the mirror there was no cat. Looking at the mirror I said, "That's weird." and it happened again.  It happened right in front of me!  The mirror rattled and moved as if something has bumped into it.  I was staring right at it, not out of the corner of my eye, not something I heard but didn't see.  The mirror moved right before my eyes.

No cat, no wind, no furnace running, no tremors or Canadian earthquakes.  I really have no explanation for this.  I'm a bit baffled.

The mirror is pictured in this post.  As you can see it's just hanging on the wall.  Nothing really touches it.  I don't know if I'd say it was paranormal, but it sure was strange.

New October Podcast & References

The October podcast is out!  This month I share the events leading up to my DEATH! We also talk to my guest Julia as she shares some of her spooky experiences in Ukraine.  Then I quiz her on some Russian folklore and get to the bottom of this Baba Yaga made popular by the John Wick movies.  Thank you so much for joining me on the podcast.

Listen to the podcast here: SoundCloud

As promised below are the pictures for reference.

The Naomi Event

Below is the drawing from Naomi as well as part of the company website.  The flash intro to the site showed exactly what her drawing portrayed.  A graveyard, a dead tree with symbols and ravens in the tree.  As you can see in the web site sample the symbols are the same.

Creatures of Russian Folklore

Here are reference to the creatures we spoke about in Russian folklore.  In order left to right we have Vodyanoi, Leshiy, Domovoi, & Baba Yaga's strange house in the woods.

REPOST: Interview with Author Annie Wilder

A while back I listened to an interview on the Darkness on the Edge of Town radio show. It was with the author of the book House of Spirits and Whispers, Annie Wilder. The true story was about her experiences in a 100 year old house she bought which was haunted. In the interview she was so down to earth and the story was so compelling that I went out and bought the book. I just finished reading it and enjoyed it so much I contacted her and asked if she’d do an interview about herself and the book. She agreed. I’ll keep it brief since I’m sure she isn’t looking to write another book for me.

Abandoned Mine Sounds: Update

Awhile back I posted a great video from the YouTube channel  Exploring Abandoned Mines and Unusual Places. It was of him testing a sponsored flashlight when he came across strange noises.  It was super intriguing because he obviously wasn't creating the video to make something scary.

I recently revisited this video and saw a very interesting comment from someone that claims to have been a coal miner in the Appalachian mountains.  It was as follows....

Robbie Smith:
Folks, I've worked in and out of the coal mines in southern Appalachia quite a bit over the years, and as a former coal miner watching this, there's some things you need to know about working below the Drip Mouth of a mine:
1. It is quite normal, very normal actually, to hear things back in a mine shaft. Normally you don't hear the noises until it's dinner time when they shut off the machines and everyone sits down at the 'dinner hole' back in the mine, but we all know (as coal miners) that there's more activity going on in the mine besides our activity, and we often choose to ignore it.

2. It is a common thing to hear things, see lights that aren't supposed to be there, hear voices that aren't supposed to be there, and even see an Orb from time to time. Most of the men who work in the mine accept it and just go about their job, though I admit, it gets creepy back in the shaft when you're very far down in to the mountain sometimes. I never feared it because other miners were always right there with me, and there's safety in numbers - most of the time.

3. Tommyknockers: We had an unfortunate accident in one of our mines years ago, and a miner lost his life when the shaft he was working in collapsed in on him. We called in rescue and tried to get him out, but he was so far back into the shaft with his equipment, we couldn't get to him. He died back there, and it was a tragic horrible accident. The mine company (Eastern) decided to just brick up that part of the shaft and leave him in there, and to this day he is in the shaft, though passed on, and entombed in the mine.

4. Our dinner hole was close to the entrance of that shaft, though it was bricked over, and I admit.. There were times.. yes, you could almost 'hear' that man back in that shaft hitting the wall with a chisel of some kind, or a hammer. I was far from the only one to hear that, and the grown men, family men, who I had my dinner with at 3am back in the mine would get a little frightened at times. We moved our dinner hole after a while because it was too unsettling to eat there for most of us.

5. We would often see Orbs just fly by out of nowhere down the mine shaft, and there was never a shift that I wasn't glad to see the dawn of the morning and I'd get out of the mine. It's scary enough down there, not knowing if each shift will be your last, and I was never 'really afraid,' but there were times, I confess, it was just eerie down in the mountain, and none of us miners ever felt alone down there.

6. The mine I am referring to is now completely closed and shut down, and has been for well over a decade, but I often think of that man who is still buried back under the mountain, and I wonder if he is still Tommyknocking on the walls back there.

I REALLY love these kind of stories.  If you have not seen the video in I was referencing I've posted it below.  It's really worth a look.

Ghost Screaming in Room 209

I'm sure most people have seen this video before.  If you haven't the story is that people were complaining to management about a woman screaming in one of the room that had no assigned occupant.  An employee is sent to investigate.  He is able to confirm he hears screaming and opens the room to find nobody.  The furniture is overturned, rug is torn, shower is running.  Ghostalkers does an excellent job of dissecting the video and asking showing some real holes.

As the viewer we really see nothing and are left to rely on the audio as fact.  Personally I find the floating apparition a bit over the top.  Also I would believe it more if there wasn't a music track.  In my opinion this video is a hoax because nothing has ever been confirmed.  Not the people in the video, not the police report, not even the hotel where it happened.  But it's still really fun to consider what if it wasn't fake?

Sounds Recorded While Sleeping

Sounds picked up on sleep recording apps. I never knew these apps existed. Might want to give it a try.  Most of them are kind of lame but it would be fun to play with.

Another Strange Sound in an Abandoned Mine

I've become quite interested in watching the Exploring Abandoned Mine channel on YouTube.  I've watched a lot of them and here is another video with a strange occurrence. At 7:32 there appears to be a intercom call. https://youtu.be/yCy8iWxf1Us?t=7m32s

For my cynical mind this seems too perfect. An abandon mine that has no power but he hears haunting echoes of intercom calls so it’s a bit suspect. However if you look at his channel there are hundreds of videos going back 9 years. Very few of them make claims that there is anything spooky going on so making over hyped fake videos is not his focus. He seems to legitimately enjoy mine exploration for the sake of mine exploration.

I can accept some people aren't of my curious mind but if I heard that I would have a hard time leaving.  I would be driven to know what was causing it.  I do agree that mines are extremely dangerous and the thought (as one commenter suggests) that it's a warning call before blasting would certainly concern me.  You never know what the plans are for a place that you're exploring without permission.  I know some States are attempting to collapse abandoned mines to prevent this kind of exploration.

Regardless if it's real or not it is certainly interesting.

We Want To Know Your Thoughts

I really want to seriously consider doing a podcast or maybe a YouTube Live stream about paranormal topics but only if it involves you.  Take a look at the video below and let me know if this is something you'd be interest to see.

Haunted Houses and Hotels

I received a nice email today from a Girl Scout Troop thanking me for the Nocturne Society site.  Apparently they used it as reference for a storytelling project of spooky stories.  They also suggested I link a different site that they found useful so here it goes.  They suggested America's Famous Haunted Houses & Hotels.

Thanks for the link girls and have a safe Halloween.  Get lots of treats!

The Sleep Watcher: A TRUE Ghost Story

My grandparents lived in a two-story farmhouse about 5 miles outside of a sleepy Iowa town. The house was up on a hill surrounded by their farmland, and a sizable yard with deep ditches. I would help my grandparents mow lawn. I, of course, got the rougher job of mowing those ditches and trimming with the push mower. There were other things I’d rather be doing on a summer day, but they paid me and my grandfather always kept the fridge stocked with soda, so I didn’t mind.

Once school started they would pick me up from school and I would stay the night there. The second floor of the house had two bedrooms and one large room between them. In one of the bedrooms there was a bed, desk, and dresser so if I had homework I’d often do it up there. It was nice because I didn’t have my own room at home. However, when it got late my grandparents would always call me to come downstairs and sleep on the couch. I found this strange. I would ask them why I couldn’t just sleep in the room upstairs and they always said, “we just want you down here with us.” This went on for several months.

One day back at my house I was having a conversation with my mother about the next time I needed to go out and mow their lawn. So I decided to ask her if she knew why I always had to sleep on the couch when there was a perfectly good bed upstairs. She said, “Because at night there is a man that watches you sleep.” She just blurted it out as casual as can be. I said, “there’s a WHAT? A man?” “Well it’s not really a man, it’s a ghost or something,” she said. “You’ve seen it?” I asked. She said, “Yes, it’s been there since I was a little girl. My sister and I had to move our room downstairs because we just couldn’t sleep up there.” “Yeah right,” I replied. She then said, “Well if you don’t believe me ask your father. When we first got married we stayed up there for a few months until we found a home. He saw it too.” So I ran off to talk to my father.

Now my father is a no nonsense person. I’d even say grumpy. He never had time for “ghost crap.” I walked into his workshop across the road, went into his office and sat down on a chair. He is a wood carver and was whittling away on his current job. Without stopping he soon said, “Well, what do you want?” So I asked, “Is there a man in grandma’s upstairs that watches you sleep?  He stopped, put down his tools and said, “I don’t want to talk about that.” He then took a drink of coffee and went back to whittling. Evidently the conversation was over about that subject.

Something that interesting wasn’t going to leave my mind so easily. In the weeks to come I asked my father the same question over and over. Finally it paid off and the old man cracked. He said, “Fine, I’ll tell you but after I do you won’t want to stay at your grandparents house again.” I braced myself and he continued. “As your mom said we stayed there when we first got married. I had heard about the thing in the attic and I thought it was a bunch of crap. But one night at about three in the morning your mother shook me awake and said, ‘Mike, there it is.’ I opened my eyes and it looked so much like a man standing there that I lunged at it to tackle him I just went through it and fell onto the floor.” Being a kid that was enough for me. I even stopped doing homework up there. But that’s not the end of the story.

Years later after I grew up and moved out, my parents got a divorce. My grandfather had passed away by then and my mother moved in with my grandmother into the farmhouse. My youngest sister Annie was still in high school at the time and moved in with them as well. She stayed in a small room just under the stairs to the second floor. In fact you could see the underside of the stairway going through the room. Annie was having a hard time sleeping in that room because she would hear footsteps going up and down the stairs all night. Unfortunately I was living over 2000 miles away at the time and couldn’t go check it out.

One night Dad received a call from Annie asking if he could come get her. She said mom and grandma had gone shopping and she was alone and scared because someone was pounding on the door. My father assumed that a salesman had stopped by and scared her but agreed to drive to come get her. After getting off the phone he realized he had a few things to do first and called her back to tell her but there was no answer. Fearing something had happened he raced out.

As he was driving up to the house he saw her sitting in the yard.  As he got out of the car he said, “You know Annie generally if someone is pounding on the door you don’t go outside to wait.  She said, “Nobody was pounding on the front door. Someone was pounding on the door to the upstairs!” My father ran inside and searched but of course found nothing. To this day I wonder what she would have seen if Annie had opened the door.

A couple years later I moved back to the area. Unfortunately by then my grandmother moved into town and my mother had the place torn down and built a new home where the old one stood. My mother happily said there was nothing spooky happening in her new place. So I thought it was all over. However my other sister Heather had done something kind of silly before the home was demolished.

Heather said she felt bad for the ghost. So when they were cleaning out the furniture she went upstairs and said out loud, “This house is going to be torn down. If you want you can come home with me.” Why she did this is beyond me. I guess she always did have a soft heart. Later the house was gone and all was quiet.

Many months later my sister started waking up at night to hear her toddler talking to someone. She’d ask him to whom he was talking and he’d always say, “Monster.” Then one night she saw it. She opened her eye and there he was standing in the doorway. She said she sat up startled and it would just fade away. She claimed she didn’t mind because she felt it wouldn’t hurt her.

Then one night she woke up to her teenage daughter screaming. She ran into her room and found her hysterical because she saw a man in her room. Heather tried to tell her she didn’t think it was going to hurt anyone but she refused to sleep in her room. Finally after a couple days she got her to go back and then it happened again. This was getting to be a bit much.
Heather had taken a few things from the old house before they tore it down and one thing was a desk and shelves unit that she planned to refinish. One day she went out the garage to get started on the project and she got a strange feeling like someone was there, followed by a loud buzzing in her ear. She decided to check out where the desk came from so she called my grandmother. Come to find out the desk was in the house when my grandparents moved in and was the only thing that remained of the original home. This gave her the feeling that she had a little leverage. So she went back out and started scraping old paint off the desk. Soon the buzzing started again.

She dropped the tools and yelled out loud, “Stop it now! I’m not going to destroy it. I’m refinishing it and plan on moving it inside. But if you don’t stop scaring my children I’m going to smash it and throw it in the trash!” Heather has not had a single thing happen since then.
Why was the ghost apparently trapped in the attic? Was he clinging to the final piece of his beloved home? I went to Heather’s house and stayed the night a couple time but never saw a thing. I guess the threat did the trick for now. At least until someone else gets the desk.

A Little Dusting

Tis the season that I start looking at the old spooky shelf, up high to keep away from the kiddies.  You know the one.  Everyone with an interest in paranormal has at least one shelf.  Some have more than one.  And some have even more in boxes somewhere so they don't freak out visitors to their home.  lol

The Sad Truth of My Paranormal Belief

I have to admit I have been on a long hiatus. This is mainly because my believe in the paranormal and supernatural has mostly dissipated. I’ve become much more interested in the scientific reason behind things rather than turning to any metaphysical reasoning. If find this all very upsetting however because it’s fun to believe in ghosts and the unknown. I love that chill from a spooky story or being in reportedly haunted locations.

I've always considered myself a skeptic but open to the possibilities of something else out there. However in recent years I felt stupid for believing in anything outside the realm of science.   I blame people like Neil deGrasse Tyson and shows like SciShow and Vsauce for swaying me towards the side of logical thinking.

Recently for my job I needed to do some research on haunted locations and realized how much I missed it all.  I love reading about scary tales and locations that are thought to be haunted.  It’s just plain fun.  I would love to bring back the Nocturne Society web page and be involved again. But for me the veil has been lifted so it would all be for novelty and fun of the paranormal rather than the image most paranormal groups try to project of hard researchers looking for answers.  Frankly that is one of the things that drove me away.

Paranormal research groups are always so hilarious.  They talk about hauntings like they can categorize them, “This is a residual haunting. This is an intelligent haunting. Ghosts are usually the result of unsolved business or a tragic event.”  It’s all such crap.  Nobody has proven anything at all.  So these “rules” they come up with are all made up bullshit that is accepted as facts.  But there are no facts…..at all.  There is no proof……at all.  The paranormal is all creepy feelings and unexplained experiences of the people reporting it.  That doesn't mean it's not fun to speculate and talk about.  But lets extinguish all scientific logic before grasping for paranormal causes.

Feedback is very welcome.

Too Jumpy

Here is a good example of what happened when to people bounce emotions off each other during an investigation. If you watch the entire sequence you can see how they escalate to the point at 20:51 when he loses it completely.  You really need to keep a cool head out there.

TOP5s Creepiest Ghost Sightings

Hey my friend over at the Top5s YouTube channel asked me to share a video I really enjoyed. The unique thing about it is the #1 video was recorded by him! Please note the shadow and footsteps are a hologram he admits however the consistent phone interference is unexplained. Check it out!

Nocturne Society Going Away? Please Help!

Yeah, I really haven't been keeping the site up to date. This is mainly due to my uncertainty with the subject. I've become much more interested in science in the past few years and science doesn't really mesh well with the supernatural. I still find the subject fun however more as a source of entertainment than actual "search for the truth" that all these other sites claim.

Recently I received a notice that my domain needs renewed and I'm thinking of letting it go. I'm not even sure if anyone reads the site anymore. If there is real interest I will keep it however if not I don't see a need.

If you would like to see the site continue and get regular updates send me an email or post a comment on the this blog. The deadline is April. The email is thenocturnesociety@gmail.com.
